AIWA "The One Thing" #29: Jensen's First Tweet Ever. Satya, Sundar, Zuck, Elon + Altman Answered In Hours. Open + Closed.

The assumption that Closed = Smart / Premium and Open Source = Weak / Budget is obsolete.

No need to look any further than Kimi K3.

On July 24, NVIDIA's Jensen Huang published his "Open Weights and American AI Leadership" letter.

His first tweet on the bird app, ever.

The pace with which the industry got behind it was breathtaking. Within hours: Satya. Sundar. Zuck. Elon. Mira. Altman. Gurley. Jack. Brian Armstrong. And many more.

When the industry lines up behind open weights this fast, pay attention. Here's why it matters.

AI-enabled intelligent systems introduce real-time situational awareness, contextual reasoning and immediate optimization across the vast majority of administrative, technical and analytical workflows.

The organizational equivalent of upgrading from driving a car with a paper map to Waze.

There's no comparison. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.

Which is why there's no ceiling on intelligence on demand. We've never seen a TAM like this and it's still early. So early.

But framing this as Open Source vs Closed is a mistake.

It's not a binary. It's not one or the other. It's Open Source and Closed.

And Kimi K3 is exactly why. Open Source is now going toe-to-toe with the frontier. So choosing Open no longer means trading away capability.

The question stopped being quality vs. cost. It has become architecture.

At its core: renting managed capability as a utility (Closed) vs. owning downloadable software infrastructure (Open Source).

There are real tradeoffs and plenty of nuance, but the cleanest way to think about it is the complexity of the work.

High-volume, repetitive operations with a right and a wrong answer (i.e.) invoice extraction. Versus unconstrained, creative problem solving, multi-step reasoning, circumstances evolving in real time (i.e.) an M&A transaction.

The most complex work is where Closed thrives. You get instant access to bleeding-edge reasoning, no infrastructure to stand up.

For most of everything else, there's Open Source.

Running a massive frontier model for every routine company query is like hiring a senior partner to format spreadsheets and slide decks.

You get approximately 90% of the reasoning power at a fraction of the compute, running several times faster. You download a frozen snapshot. No third party can alter your deployment. You run it anywhere as standard software. And you fine-tune it strictly on your company's timeline.

This isn't about missing out on a fancy new chat app.

It's about competing against peers executing the exact same business model at 5x the speed and a fraction of the operating cost.

Run at it.

Humans + Machines. Never Humans vs Machines.
